How to properly cite and reuse images returned by Pl@ntNet API

Summary

Different Pl@ntNet API routes (/identify, /species, …) may return images. Those images can be reused provided that licence requirements are respected.

Reuse

Images shared on Pl@ntNet are usually licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA).

This means you are free to:

  • Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format
  • Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially

Under the following conditions:

  • Attribution — You must give appropriate credit (see examples below)
  • ShareAlike — If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original

Attribution requirements

When using Pl@ntNet images, you must include the following attributions:

  • Pl@ntNet app credit: mention that the content comes from the Pl@ntNet platform
  • License indication: specify the applicable license (CC BY-SA)
  • Contributor credit: mention the name of the original contributor/author

Single-image, diseases and varieties identification routes return images under .images. Relevant fields are:

  • author
  • license
  • citation

DWC routes return images under .media, but relevant fields are at higher level:

  • rightsHolder
  • license

Taxonomy routes return images under .images. Relevant fields are:

  • author
  • license
  • citation
